The University of Quebec at Rimouski (UQAR) is a university of the Université du Québec network located in Rimouski, Quebec, Canada. Founded in 1969, it is one of the most recent in Québec and now has more than 6,500 students at its Rimouski and Lévis campuses, near Quebec City. Offering a wide range of training to the three university cycles, it has built a reputation based on three main axes of development: oceanography, regional development and nordicity.

In particular, UQAR distinguished itself in 2011 by becoming the leading universities in Canada for university research and the second largest universities offering mainly undergraduate programs for the number of publications according to a ranking established by Research Infosource. The study also highlights the significant growth in research budgets allocated to the institution's researchers from $ 3.8 million to $ 17.4 million between 1999 and 2009.

Oceanography

Since its creation, UQAR has established the development of expertise in oceanography as one of its top priorities, given the importance of the St. Lawrence estuary and the marine environment for the region . Since 1973, UQAR has offered a master's program, which preceded by five years the formal creation of a department of oceanography. The development of teaching and research activities subsequently led to the creation of a doctoral program starting in 1982.

Before the formal creation of an academic structure, the Interuniversity Research Group for Oceanography in Quebec, bringing together researchers from Laval, Montreal and McGill universities, was set up in 1970. INRS-Oceanology has been in existence since 1972. The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans is in addition to the research activity in the region.

The presence of a critical mass of researchers and graduate students allows for the construction and expansion of an oceanological laboratory, the construction of an aquaculture station and the acquisition of a first research vessel, the N / R Alcide C. Horth, given by the Government of Quebec in 1989.

A large small university

Choosing UQAR means choosing a university where student success is a priority. UQAR is recognized for the exceptional support of its professors and lecturers.

Classes have an average of 30 students per course, which facilitates the integration of new students and, therefore, the success of their studies.

Forget the great amphitheatres that bring together 100, 200 or even 500 students at a time!

UQAR even offers a unique service, the Center for Success (CAR), which is open to students of all cycles who are experiencing temporary difficulties in their studies or who wish to improve themselves. The RAC ensures, as a preventive measure, the smooth running of university work, in order to give everyone the best chance of success.

A university of excellence in research

UQAR is distinguished from other universities by its research and development orientations which are in keeping with the characteristics of its territory.

Located in the region, on the edge of the St. Lawrence estuary, UQAR is the northernmost of Quebec's universities. This is why the marine sciences, regional development and nordicity are the axes of excellence in research that specifically color many of the programs offered at UQAR.

Innovative fields such as engineering, northern wind turbines, ancient regional literature, heritage and health sciences have grown in recent years.

At the Lévis campus, as in the case of the Rimouski campus, research activities in the areas of youth persistence in schools, special education, nursing and management are emerging.

Among the top research universities in the country, UQAR has been designated five consecutive years since 2011 in the Top 3 Universities of the Year in Research in Canada among general universities that mostly offer undergraduate programs by the independent firm RE $ EARCH Infosource Inc.

Between 1999 and 2009, research funding increased from $ 3.8 million to $ 17.4 million - an increase of more than 350%. Since 2010, grants obtained by UQAR to support research have remained at more than $ 20 million.

UQAR is an engine for deploying research partnerships, transferring knowledge to the industrial environment and developing innovation and best practices for the benefit of the environment.

Practice-based training

Thanks to its privileged location, UQAR allows students to explore and study exceptional natural environments close to campuses. While emphasizing student success, the training programs offered at UQAR are distinguished by their excellence and their uniqueness.

Many programs include a high proportion of hands-on fieldwork or workplace placements.

Student life open to the world

UQAR has more than 50 cooperation and exchange programs with some 20 countries around the world.

Each year, UQAR welcomes more than 400 foreign students who make its walls vibrate to the rhythms and accents of the world, enriching at the same time the daily life at UQAR.

The human dimension of the UQAR facilitates the integration and success of foreign students. UQAR proposes a twinning program for newly arrived students with students already on campus, as soon as they arrive at university.
